About the role
Join the Commercial Solutions Team where we make delivering housing affordability solutions easy. As a member of the Homeowner Underwriting team, you will ensure the mortgage underwriting of loans for new and existing homeowner properties with 1 to 4 units using the emili system, while providing excellent client service through effective communication about CMHC’s mortgage insurance products, policies and guidelines. This position is an exceptional opportunity for an individual with strong analytical and communication skills to achieve his/her professional goals, while creating a sustainable organization that is at the heart of a world leading housing system.

 

This is a temporary position of a duration of 12 months
 
Please note that this position is intended to primarily cover the closing shifts. Applicants must be available to work until 9 pm Eastern on an ongoing basis and occasionally on Saturdays from 10 am to 6 pm EST.
 
What you’ll do:

 

  • Analyze the information on applications for mortgage loan insurance for 1-4 unit owner-occupied and rental properties transmitted by approved lenders, in particular, the information related to the borrower, the property, and the market.
  • Apply sound judgment and decision-making practices and negotiate a reasonable solution in line with the risk appetite.
  • Exercise prudence and diligence to ensure compliance with all relevant internal policies and procedures applicable to the function. 
  • Use effective oral and written communication to deliver clear rationale for underwriting decisions in manner that achieves lender concurrence and understanding.
  • Respond to various mortgage insurance inquiries via phone and/or email.
  • Maintain quality relationships with clients to understand their needs and objectives and explore opportunities.
  • Work in a team environment to provide effective and efficient delivery of services to contribute to service standard.

 
What you should have:

 

  • Undergraduate degree in business, finance, or commerce and at least three years of experience in mortgage underwriting or individual credit analysis. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Knowledge of the principles of risk management and residential property appraisals.
  • Understanding of the mortgage industry environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving skills and decision-making skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of risk factors related to credit, employment, local market conditions and mortgage sector trends.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret consumer credit bureau reports.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in both official languages (English and French).

 

It would be great if you also had:

 

  • Sound knowledge of mortgage financing and real estate laws, fraud indicators, default remedy and/or property administration.
