Granville Island is a 38-acre site, with 40 buildings varying from the Granville Island Public Market to modern redeveloped structures with new services, to old factories that are used for parking. Outdoor sections include roads and parking lots surfaced with asphalt, paving stones and concrete, grassy areas and trees, playgrounds, tennis and outdoor basketball courts, public seating and eating areas, boardwalks, ponds, a water park and a rocky shoreline. Marine services include one public and two private docks and two ferry landings.
Annually, there are more than 11 million visits to Granville Island. As such it is critical to Granville Island’s ongoing success that the buildings and grounds be maintained at the highest standards. The objective of the janitorial position is to ensure a high standard of cleanliness and sanitation in the Public Market, Net Loft, the exterior grounds and other buildings.
About the role
The Janitor role is a full-time, permanent position and an exceptional opportunity to become a member of the Granville Island team. You will work with the Janitorial and Maintenance Teams to ensure Granville Island is well maintained and kept in a high standard of cleanliness, sanitation, and repair.
The Granville Island Janitor is one of fourteen (14) full-time positions reporting to the Janitorial Supervisor. The Janitor’s work schedule will reflect operational requirements of a 7-day- a- week operation. Lead Hand duties will be rotated among the Janitorial staff on a day-to-day schedule ensuring that the supervisor has contact with all shifts and that key activities are fulfilled.
Please note the Janitor will be working the following schedule:
- Night shift: Monday to Friday, 8:00 pm to 4:50 am.
- Monday (alternating) on a compressed work week.
- Saturday and Sunday: days off.
What you’ll do:
- Cleaning all public and staff washrooms, all ground level windows, cold storage room, hallways etc.
- Stacking and placing of approximately 200 chairs in the seating area.
- Securing Public Market doors at closing (locking 12 doors).
- Reporting suspected security concerns immediately to Market Office and Island security personnel.
- Changing garbage liners and cleaning garbage containers.
- Transport of waste to compactor sites and disposal in compactors.
- Clean up as required on a daily basis due to spills, breakage, etc.
- Participate in the annual winter cleaning of the market which includes high dusting using scissor lifts and boom lifts.
- Clean up windows of high areas of the as scheduled (rooftop and skylights) using scissor lift and tucker pole.
What you should have:
- A certificate in WHMIS (workplace hazardous materials information system).
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in Institutional / Commercial cleaning, or equivalent in training.
- An experience in the use of floor scrubber, auto scrubber, high pressure washer, scissor lift, boom lift, floor sweepers, forklift, wet/dry vacuum, floor drain pump and other equipment as needed.
- A Building Maintenance or Building Service Worker certificate.
It would be great if you also had:
- Safety knowledge of WCB regulations and the Canada Labour Code.
