About the role
The Grounds Maintenance position is an exceptional opportunity to work for CMHC and become a member of the Granville Island team. In this role, you will work with the Maintenance Department to ensure Granville Island is well maintained and kept in a high standard of repair, cleanliness, and sanitation.
This is a temporary position of a duration of 18 months.
Shift hours: From Sunday to Thursday, from 8am-4pm
Shift premiums:
+5.75% to all hours worked.
+$2.50 / hour (for hours worked between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m.
+$2.25 / hour (for hours worked on Saturdays and Sundays).
What you’ll do:
- Operate a range of fleet and utility vehicles, including commercial sweepers, auto scrubbers, burnishers, scissor lifts, forklifts, and boom lifts.
- Perform exterior cleaning tasks such as pressure washing sidewalks, plazas, docks, and cleaning gutters, skylights, and windows.
- Conduct minor repairs and maintenance: carpentry (planks, deck boards), asphalt patching, paving stone installation, plumbing, drywall, and door hardware.
- Maintain and cleans waste compactor sites, removes graffiti, and supports snow and ice removal operations.
- Clean and maintain park sites, playground equipment, and performs seasonal tasks like leaf blowing and vacuuming.
- Assist senior technicians with HVAC, machinery, small engine, and equipment maintenance and repair.
- Support events by setting up/taking down tents, stages, and barricades according to site plans and work orders.
- Use a work order system to prioritize tasks, records equipment readings, and interacts courteously with the public as a CMHC representative.
What you should have:
- A certification or willing to obtain certification within one month for forklift, scissor lift, and boom lift operation.
- A valid driver’s license.
- A minimum 1 year of experience in grounds, property, or building maintenance.
- Training or coursework in landscaping, grounds care and building maintenance.
- Skilled in using grounds maintenance equipment (e.g., power washers, leaf blowers, street sweepers).
- A knowledge of basic carpentry and installation of interlocking pavers; proficient with power and hand tools.
- Familiar with safety regulations under the Workers Compensation Board and Canada Labour Code.
- Able to work safely in marine environments and stay focused in high-traffic areas, following directions and making minor decisions independently.
It would be great if you also had:
- A basic construction trades knowledge: plumbing, electrical, mechanical etc. is an asset
- A WHMIS certificate.
