Senior Building Consultant - Toronto or Ottawa

Join the Client Operations Team, where we make delivering housing affordability solutions easy. You will bring your technical and communication skills and your engineering expertise to this Principal, Technical Services position in Toronto

 

 

 

Responsibilities: 

 

•    Providing expert functional guidance and advice to technical resource officers using an in-depth knowledge of up-to-date construction theories and practices. 
•    Providing expert functional guidance, interpretation and assistance to CMHC’s internal and external clients. 
•    Performing on-site technical reviews and preparing inspection narrative reports in support of Multiple Underwriting, Indigenous and Northern Housing, Real Estate and Affordable Housing / National Housing Strategy.
•    Monitoring and measuring the quality of work of external contracts. 
•    Undertaking special requests or assignments and comprehensive technical audits and consultation on multiple-unit residential buildings. 
•    Supporting CMHC’s technical transfer initiative by making presentations to the general public and the housing industry on various technical issues. 
•    Working closely with the immediate team, the manager and other regions to ensure the continued delivery of technical services, with emphasis on efficiency, effectiveness and quality. 
•    Networking with external agencies such as professional associations, provincial and municipal authorities, consultants, developers, builders and lenders to maintain good relations and to keep abreast of current issues.

 


Minimum Qualifications:

 

•    University or College diploma in engineering technology, building sciences, or architecture technology, and a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in building technology or an equivalent combination of education and 10 years of relevant experience;
•    Demonstrated experience providing guidance to others regarding sound construction practices.
•    Demonstrated experience working with the National Building Code, and provincial/municipal regulations.
•    Demonstrated experience with related engineering, building science principles and construction theory and the principles and practices for complex multiple unit buildings.
•    Demonstrated experience in the use of computer systems - in particular, spreadsheet and data management applications and software used in the technical or building inspection professions. 
•    Membership in a nationally recognized Home Inspectors and Property Inspector Association would be considered an asset.
•    In-depth understanding of construction policies, procedures and guidelines. 
•    A sound understanding of related engineering, building science principles and construction theory and the principles and practices for complex multiple unit buildings.
•    Ability to build and maintain client relationships, recognize opportunities for improvement and contribute to a working environment where diversity is valued, respected and integrated.
•    Ability to meaningfully share expertise and advice that is relevant to the clients’ needs. 
•    Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (both oral and written) with a variety of audiences.
•    Excellent organizational and time management skills enabling the balance of workloads and the prioritization of requests to meet deadlines.
•    Ability to achieve results, deliver quality work and adapt to changing priorities.
•    Demonstrated research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
•    Project management skills (asset)

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

•    Ability to manage flexible work hours, including some evenings and weekends.
•    A valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle, as this position requires some travel in very remote locations including site visits.
•    Ability to move safely over uneven terrain, in confined spaces or high altitudes.
•    Experience in cost estimating, quantity surveying, energy modeling, GHG or accessibility shall be considered an asset.
•    Exposure or experience to digital workflows especially within Microsoft Dynamic365, PowerBI is considered an asset.
•    Builinguism French and English is considered an asset
