About the role

We’re constantly evolving to build an inclusive housing system through research, design, innovation and partnerships. The Specialist, Media Relations, promotes and implements proactive media relations strategies nationally, complementing strategic communications and issues management goals; contributes to the development of a national strategy to build, maintain and nurture mutually beneficial relationships between CMHC and the media.



What you will need

  • Undergraduate degree in a field related to journalism, public relations, industrial relations, and communications.
  • Minimum of five years of prior relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience producing news releases and media lines.
  • Demonstrated experience in analytical and problem-solving methods and techniques.
  • Oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience providing advice, guidance and recommendations to senior management.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Understanding of CMHC’s corporate objectives, organization and the Communications and Marketing Framework.
  • Experience working in a newsroom considered as an asset.



What you will be doing

  • Provide substantive, expert advice and guidance through media coaching of senior CMHC officials.
  • Act as CMHC spokesperson with media, responding to questions in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Provide advice and direct media guidance to CMHC senior management and business lines to ensure consistency of messages with national, provincial and local media and consistency in media approaches.
  • Provide media issue management recommendations to communications plans for corporate activities.
  • Organize and coordinate the response to and engagement with the media during high profile events.
  • Act as a direct link between CMHC and the media. Establish and maintain a broad national network of media contacts.
  • Build and cultivate relationships with the media, including the identification of new relationship opportunities.
  • Work with team members and business lines to identify media solutions in support of corporate and business line objectives.
  • Research communication strategy key issues, trends, developments, attitudes, opinions and likely reactions from principal stakeholders.
  • Monitor comments, mentions and questions in the media and respond appropriately.
  • Contribute to the development of and implement media relations policies for use across the Corporation.
  • Contribute to the development of and implement national communications, media relations and issues management strategies.
  • Identify the need for environmental research and incorporation of the research analysis into the broader communication strategies.
