This position reports to our Legal Services team in our Office of the Chief Financial Officer sector. This sector uses financial foresight and legal insight to improve housing affordability.

 

About the role
We’re constantly evolving to build an inclusive housing system through research, design, innovation and partnerships As a member of CMHC’s Legal Services team, you will advise on securitization, capital markets and investment transactions.  You will support CHMC in its role as administrator of the Canadian Covered Bonds program and provide advice on its capital markets-based mortgage funding programs (Canada Mortgage Bonds and National Housing Act Mortgage Backed Securities).  You will also provide support on investment transactions for CMHC’s reserve and pension funds.   Your knowledge of securities law and regulation of financial institutions, while not mandatory, would be an asset, as would experience with insolvency, financial institution regulation and resolution, derivatives and other areas of corporate and transactional law. This will help us make housing affordable for everyone in Canada.

What you will need
• A commitment to demonstrating CMHC values.
• Member of the Bar in good standing in a common law and/or civil law province,
• A minimum of 10 years of experience working as a lawyer in financial institution or law firm.
• Demonstrated experience in the areas referenced above.
• Demonstrated experience managing multiple files.
• Demonstrated experience conducting research and analysis.
• Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining a professional relationship with business partners (external and internal).
• Strong interpersonal skills including tact and judgement in order to liaise with clients.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Excellent analytical and conceptual skills and the ability to interpret and analyze varied complex matters and to explain them to clients in a clear and concise manner.
• Strong problem solving and decision making skills including the ability to be flexible, creative and innovative to ensure responsiveness to client's needs.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct research in both the traditional and technological environments.
• Ability to balance the big picture with meeting the day-to-day needs of the organization.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.

 

What you will be doing
• Identifying legal issues, requirements and risks as well as working with clients to develop strategies or approaches for managing these risks and achieving business objectives taking into account legal and business implications.
• Providing advice on legal implications as well as the legal risks related to a range of policy, program and operational matters.
• Reviewing and commenting on agreements and issuer offering circulars and disclosure documents.
• Providing transactional support.
• Supporting the legislative monitoring framework by assisting with interpreting changes to provincial and federal legislation.
• Analyzing and interpreting various broad legal issues and jurisprudential developments across many jurisdictions (i.e. Common law, provincial, federal and in international contexts).
• Developing briefings and correspondence.
