About the role
We’re constantly evolving to build an inclusive housing system through research, design, innovation and partnerships. You will oversee risk recommendations and decisions related to underwriting or servicing an insured loan, mitigating risks, optimizing client service and achieving corporate objectives. You will provide quality service to enhance the corporate image and maintains sound business relationships with industry clients and various levels of CMHC.  This will help us make housing affordable for everyone in Canada.

 

What you will need

• Undergraduate degree in a related field such as Finance, Commerce, Business, Real Estate, Economics, Accounting.
• Minimum of three years of relevant experience in mortgage & banking industry in underwriting capacity of commercial or multi 5+unit rental apartments, or in Inspection/appraisal industry.
• Knowledge of procedures, policies and regulations and risk management.
• Knowledge of financial analysis and statements, borrower legal structures and real estate financing.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of market trends and developments in Canada and of industry partners.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Decision-making skills.
• Understanding of serviced client groups in Canada, including related legal documentation.
• Successful completion of a professional association designation would be considered an asset. Sound knowledge of mortgage financing and real estate laws, default remedy and/or property administration.

• Knowledge of construction financing, appraisal, building technology, environment, market analysis, financial statement analysis, real estate law, property management, and industry trends to be able to assess the degree of risk and make sound underwriting decisions.

• Financial designation (Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) designation) or Real Estate Certificate or designation (e.g. Certified Property Manager (CPM)), AACI, EA in Québec (Ordre des Evaluateurs agrées du Québec) considered an asset.

 

What you will be doing

Advice and Guidance
• Offer advice, support and alternative solutions to clients and stakeholders including the communication of key decisions, the interpretation of policies and the response to inquiries related to mortgage loan insurance.
• Serve as peer reviewer and approver on risk recommendation decisions within financial authority limits, as applicable.
• Participate on national teams that shape functional policies, products and processes.

 

Analysis and Reporting

• Provide effective and efficient delivery of mortgage loan insurance in contribution to service standards.
• Analyze applications involving issues including misrepresentation, borrower structures and financial capacity reviews and exceptions to policy, as applicable.
• Conduct detailed risk analysis involving program/product requirements, including but not limited to an assessment of the property, market, borrower and loan, which may involve financial, legal and professional reviews.
• Apply sound judgment and decision-making practices that are factual and based on well-reasoned analysis to derive recommendations and solutions in line with CMHC's risk appetite.
• Exercise prudence and diligence to ensure compliance with all relevant internal policies and procedures applicable to the function.
• Provide insurance risk recommendations and present mitigation options.

 

Relationship Management

• Maintain quality relationships with clients to understand their needs and objectives and explore opportunities.
• Work in a team environment and contribute to service standards and turnaround times.
• Use effective oral and written communication techniques to deliver quality service.
• Take immediate action to address client needs and inquiries.
• Engage internal support functions such as legal services, policy and operations, and borrower analysis to seek clarification and concurrence in support of recommendations.


People Leadership (Human Relations Skills)
• Understanding, influencing and/or serving people are important considerations in causing actions or acceptance by others.
