Our Analytics team reports to the Office of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and the pool reports to the Director of Analytics. The CIO is leading the digital transformation and maturity of our data and analytics capabilities to accelerate housing affordability.

We are building a pool of data scientists with different levels of expertise. We are looking for people with strong analytical skills and big ideas to join our team to support the growth and maturity of data science at CMHC.  This team will leverage the wealth of data available to improve and provide valuable insights in support of decision-making in support of achieving our ambitious goal.


We are currently seeking to fill two Data Scientist I (Junior) position. In this role, you will be responsible for utilizing and proposing analytics techniques and modeling moderately complex problems, discovering insights and identifying opportunities using statistical, algorithmic, mining and visualization techniques. In addition to the analytic skills, this role is also proficient at integrating and preparing large, varied datasets and communicating results. You will be working closely with the leadership and business teams as well as other partners, turning data into insights and maturing our data-driven decision making environment while helping us make housing affordable for everyone in Canada.

What you will need
• Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Physics or any other related quantitative field. 
• Minimum of 3 years of work experience as a Data Scientist or similar position including a demonstrated proficiency integrating and preparing large, varied datasets and communicating results.
• Solid programming skills in open-source programming language (e.g. Python) or a statistical software package (e.g. R).     
• Proficiency in conducting statistical analysis, quantitative analytics, forecasting/predictive analytics, multivariate testing and optimizing algorithms.      
• Experience using a wide range of analytical techniques (e.g. supervised learning, clustering, natural language processing (NLP), time series analysis, A/B testing, regressions, correlations, statistical significance, network/link analysis, sentiment analysis).     
• Solid experience manipulating large datasets and using databases. Proficiency in using query languages such as SQL and Hive.     
• Experience working with Big Data technologies such as Spark, Cassandra, and/or Hadoop.
• Experience in data visualization, in particular using Power Bi.     
• Solid critical thinking and problem solving skills which drives creativity and innovation.   
• Strong ability to work on several initiatives simultaneously and work within tight deadlines. 
• Strong ability to communicate abstract analytics findings to business teams.  
• Ability to identify, assess and manage risk to ensure desired outcomes.     
• Broad understanding of mortgage loan insurance, affordable/social programs, real estate and finance.
• Familiarity with cloud services (AWS, GCP, Azure).     
• Experience automating business processes via bots using RPA tools.     
• Experience with onboarding/offboarding for robots and robotic processes.     

What you will be doing
• As required, supports the scoping and brainstorming sessions with business lines to capture business objectives and prioritize opportunities.
• Design experiments, test hypotheses, and builds moderately complex models.  
• Conducts data analysis and applies the appropriate algorithm to discover patterns. 
• Develop and introduce new approaches to solving analytics problems.
• Research and experiment with various available technologies and tools while making recommendation on new methodologies, techniques or improvements leading to mature the analytical capability of CMHC.           
• Work with the Advisor, Data Scientists, and the Community of Practice Lead to support the maturity of the analytics capability by introducing analytics approaches (e.g. testing hypothesis, statistical validation, etc.).
• Support knowledge transfer sessions as well as the development of best practices.  
• Assess large volumes of data and works towards integrating and preparing large and varied datasets for architecting the data.     
• Responsible for modeling analytics problems, discovering insights and identifying opportunities through the use of statistical, algorithmic, and mining techniques.     
• Employ appropriate algorithms to discover patterns and validate results/findings and tests hypothesis by performing experimental design approaches.     
• Recommend ongoing enhancements to methods and models leading to insights.  
• Document progress, drafts the model build books and applies visualization techniques that are comprehensive and simplified for non-technical stakeholder audiences.   
• Works closely with business lines, data stewards, project/program managers, enterprise architecture, analytics architect and other IT teams, including partners, to turn data into critical information and knowledge used to make sound organizational decisions.     
• Escalates issues/barriers and findings to relevant stakeholders in an effort to improve decision-making and drive business performance.
