Join the Client Operations Team, where we make delivering housing affordability solutions easy. You will bring your technical engineering expertise to this Principal, Technical Services position in Vancouver!





•    Providing expert functional guidance, interpretation and assistance to CMHC’s internal and external clients, and to technical resource officers using an in-depth knowledge of up-to-date construction theories and practices.
•    Performing construction budget reviews, analyzing energy and GHG emissions reduction data and related information for multi-unit residential buildings (develop cost estimates, review energy modelling reports and energy consumption assessments, gather and analyze data to estimate energy savings and GHG emissions reductions, etc.)
•    Performing on-site technical reviews and preparing inspection narrative reports in support of Multi-Unit Underwriting, Indigenous and the North Housing, Real Estate, and the programs delivered through the National Housing Strategy
•    Researching, gathering and analyzing technical data on residential buildings 
•    Monitoring and measuring the quality of work of external contracts. 
•    Undertaking special requests or assignments and comprehensive technical audits and consultation on multiple unit residential buildings. 
•    Supporting CMHC’s technical transfer initiative by making presentation to the general public and the housing industry on various technical issues. 
•    Working closely with the immediate team, the manager and other regions to ensure the continued delivery of technical services, with emphasis on efficiency, effectiveness and quality. 
•    Networking with external agencies such as professional associations, provincial and municipal authorities, consultants, developers, builders and lenders to maintain good relations and to keep abreast of current issues.



Minimum Qualifications:


•    Diploma in civil engineering, engineering technology, building sciences, cost estimating, or energy modelling and a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in building technology or an equivalent combination of education and 10 years of relevant experience.
•    In-depth understanding of construction process, policies, procedures and guidelines. 
•    Demonstrated experience in energy-efficiency and GHG emissions reduction for new, renovation or conversion of multi-unit residential buildings 
•    Demonstrated experience with related engineering, building science principles and construction theory and the principles and practices for complex multi- residential/mixed use buildings.
•    Demonstrated experience working with the National Building Code, and provincial/municipal regulations.
•    Demonstrated research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
•    High proficiency in office computer applications ( (i.e. Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point)
•    Excellent technical and report writing skills including exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
•    Ability to read and interpret cost data sources (RS Means, Altus, etc.)
•    Ability to build and maintain client relationships, recognize opportunities for improvement and contribute to a working environment where diversity is valued, respected and integrated.
•    Ability to meaningfully share expertise and advice that is relevant to the clients’ needs. 
•    Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (both oral and written) with a variety of audiences
•    Ability to achieve results, deliver quality work and adapt to changing priorities
•    Project management skills (asset)
•    Knowledge of HOT2000 and/or related energy modelling software, energy management (asset)
•    Knowledge of energy codes and best practices (ASHRAE, NECB etc.) (asset)


Preferred Qualifications:

•    A valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle, as this position requires travel
•    Willingness and ability to travel within BC or anywhere in Canada, including to remote communities and in the North, for site visits
•    Ability to move safely over uneven terrain, in confined spaces or high altitudes.
